Why New Year's Resolutions Don't Work (until now)

“The most important thing about art is to work.
Nothing else matters except sitting down every day and trying.”
Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

2016 is upon us, and as many of us do around this time of year I take some time to get in alignment with my goals for each year.

I've been reading an amazing book called Executive Toughness by Jason Selk. Despite the misleading title, the largest takeaway (so far) is that anything that is important to us is achievable - but only if we take action. That's why New Year's resolutions rarely work. We set a goal and then don't take the steps to get there.

In pondering this I stumbled upon a math formula. It's simple, and it's powerful:

1 x 7= 7

7 x 52 = 365

365 / 40 = 9.125

I'm referring to 1 of something every day.

It really could be anything you want, but in the "What do I want my life to look like" spirit of things, I'm talking about one HOUR of something important to achieving your goals.

It could be 1 hour of practicing a creative a skill you've always wanted to master. Or it could one hour of quality time with your partner. It could also be 1 hour of reality TV, but my guess is that's not going to get you anywhere closer to the life you dream about.

The kicker is the last line of the formula:

365 hours divided by 40 is over 9 fourty-hour weeks.

By simply committing to an hour of that thing EVERY DAY, at this time next year you will have spent 9 weeks doing what's important to achieving your goals.

For me, I am committing to spend 1 hour a day on new product and furniture designs, as well as 1 hour each day on new images that I will be releasing twice a week.

The question I have then becomes:

What is important enough for you to commit one hour hour each day to?

1 hour a day
